July 21 – 25, 2025

Each year, Apprentice Camp is one of the most anticipated programs of the summer at Crab Orchard Museum!

Qualifications

  • All apprentices must be ages 8 - 14.

  • Apprentices must have a written permission form signed by a parent or guardian.

  • Apprentices are required to dress in eighteenth century attire. Apprentices may wear their own outfit from home or borrow clothing from the museum to be returned at the end of the week.

Activities

The Pioneer Apprentice Camp gives students an opportunity to experience colonial life in Appalachia through interactive programs and skill building.  These activities may include farming, blacksmithing, candle-making, gardening, weaving, play, hearth cooking, and a militia muster. Pioneer Apprentice Camp helps children build life-long communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

Time

All sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m.  There will be a break for lunch each day, and apprentices should bring their own ready-to-eat lunches.  Drinks and snacks are available at the museum gift shop.  On Friday, a potluck picnic lunch at 12:30 will be followed by a program for apprentices and their families.

Cost

The Pioneer Apprentice Program is $175.00 for family members of the museum, and $195.00 for all non-members.  Non-members may obtain a family membership at the rate of $60.00.  Please visit our Membership page for more information, or call 276-988-6755.

A limited number of need-based scholarships may be available.
To apply, please download the application form and return it by July 11, 2025.
